Well, firstly, I would suggest installing JSAS, Joomla Stand alone server, if you havent already. This way you can test all the different ones without affecting your site.

We have had the same prob with a few sites and ended up going with 4images, though had to run it seperate of joomla. Another one i have found recently, which is great if you need a simple, but effective gallery, is Zen Gallery. It is still a pretty new project, but has already come along way and utilizes ajax technology. Always good to know what your options are You can check it out at http://zenphoto.org/zenphoto/.
